History of Wise

Women's Initiative for Self-Empowerment (WISE) was founded in 1999 in reaction to the high prevalence of domestic violence in Ghana . WISE was established to respond to the increase in reports of violence against women and children, limited public awareness of and collaboration among the few organizations set up to provide services, and the lack of counseling and support programs to meet the psychological needs of survivors of violence. To meet needs not addressed by existing services, WISE has provided individual and group counseling services for survivors of violence and training in counseling and support for direct service providers. WISE set up the WISE Wellness Center in Accra to provide survivors of violence with counseling, medical, legal and social services.

Our VISION is to break the cycle of violence and sexual assault for women and children

Our MISSION

  • To provide holistic and sustainable support services to women and children survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault; education to the public-at-large; advocacy with critical stakeholders; and training to service providers on the issues of domestic violence and sexual assault.
  • To work from a womanist perspective (one that promotes freedom of choice and equality for all).

Our GOALS

  • Provide direct support services and protection for survivors. Services such as emotional support, advocacy, referrals and information to battered women and children who call or visit WISE or its partners.
  • Provide Training and Development that address needs of survivors to our staff and other service providers who work with survivors of violence.
  • Educate women's groups, professionals, politicians and the public on the issue of woman and child abuse.
  • Exchange informational material and best practices on women and child abuse with other groups and individuals working on the issue.
  • Advocate for development of and change in social systems so that they are accountable, effective and accessible for battered women and children.
