United Nations High Commisioner for Refugees:
The WISE/UNHCR partnership was set up in 2003 as a result of an increase in incidence of violence against women and children in the refugee community. WISE was requested to provide professional counselling, psycho-social support and intervention services to refugees; raise awareness about sexual and gender-based violence and to build the capacity of camp advocates and service providers to respond to domestic violence in the refugee settlements.
In an extended agreement which followed in 2004, WISE's role was expanded to include Protection counseling, which entails; interviewing, registration and repatriation of refuees, as well as providing services to unaccompanied and separated refugee children. WISE was also requested to provide empowerment support to existing refugee community leaders and groups in order to increase sustainability and operational effectiveness of refugees to meet their own protection needs.
To achieve the goal of our partnership WISE set up a multi-functional team of counselors, advocates, case managers, health experts and other service providers. For further information on our various activities in the refugee communities:
